Accounting for Practitioners and Clinics.
Exempt supplies, professional corporations, and associate arrangements. Healthcare has its own sales tax rules — and most of your income probably isn't taxable for GST/HST.
The problems generic bookkeeping misses.
Most of what you do is GST/HST exempt
Core health services generally are — but retail products, cosmetic procedures and room rental to associates often aren't. Mixed supplies are where clinics get caught.
Professional corporations
Available to most regulated practitioners, worth real money once income supports it, and governed by rules your college sets rather than the CRA.
Associates and room rental
Whether an associate is a tenant, a contractor or an employee changes the tax treatment of everything between you.
Equipment that's a real investment
Clinical equipment is a significant capital decision with tax consequences worth planning around rather than discovering.
Set up properly, from the start.
Exempt, zero-rated and taxable supplies separated correctly
Professional corporation setup and ongoing compliance
Associate and room-rental arrangements structured properly
Payroll for clinic staff
Equipment purchases planned for tax
Personal and corporate tax as one decision
You asked. We answered.
Do I charge GST/HST on my services?
It depends which part of healthcare you are in. Many core health services are not taxable at all, so you charge nothing, but the exceptions are real and that is where practices get caught. We will confirm exactly where yours sits.
Should I set up a professional corporation?
It depends on your income and what you are doing with it, and your college will have its own rules about how the corporation is structured. It is a tax planning conversation: we look at your personal goals alongside the business before recommending either way.
How should I pay an associate?
Through payroll, in most cases. We can open the payroll account with the CRA and run it, so associates are paid on time every time and the classification question does not come back on you.
Can I claim my professional dues and insurance?
Yes. Dues, liability insurance and licensing costs are ordinary costs of earning professional income.
